Vanilla Ice has made a shock exit from Dancing on Ice 2011 after a skate-off which saw him competing for survival against one of the favourites, Laura Hamilton.

Both the 90s rapper and the children’s TV presenter found themselves in the bottom two following the public vote, despite having scored well with the judges earlier in the show.

However after both had reprised their routines from the ’round the world’ themed edition – Laura performing a Charleston and Vanilla Ice a tango – the result from the panel was unanimous.

“This has definitely been the toughest decision so far,” Emma Bunton said, “but I’m saving Laura.”

Robin Cousins agreed, although questioned the fact that the pair were in the bottom two to begin with.

“I didn’t expect to see either of you here for another few weeks,” he said, “but I will go on technical performance in the skate-off and save Laura.”

And aftewards Vanilla Ice – real name Robert Van Winkle – remained laid-back despite his defeat.

“I’ve had a great time,” he said, “everything here is just amazing, and I really appreciate the whole experience.”

Earlier in the show he had been praised by the judges for showing a different side to his personality in his routine.

“You have shown us tonight that you can deliver a different performance,” said Robin, while Jason Gardiner added, “I thought you got the balance absolutely right.”

Six couples now remain, with Sam Attwater, Jeff Brazier and Chloe Madeley breezing comfortably through to next week following the public vote.

Denise Welch and Johnson Beharry VC also won a place in next weekend’s line-up despite having tied at the bottom of the judges’ scoreboard on 14.5 points each.
