The Streets musician bragged on social networking site Twitter that he was involved in the new run of the BBC sci-fi drama, starring Matt Smith as the Time Lord and Scottish actress Karen Gillan as his companion Amy Pond.
Mike Tweeted: “What a week – I can’t tell you about it, but put it this way, I’ve got a part in Doctor Who.”
But he quickly removed the post and replaced it with the cryptic message: “And just like that, the tweet is deleted.”
A spokesman for the show said: “The Doctor Who team are currently on night shoots. We do not comment on speculation surrounding possible characters in the show.”
Overseeing the new series is lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffatt, who has taken over from Russell T Davies.
Steven has written a number of Doctor Who episodes in the past, including the Bafta-winning edition Blink.
The new 13-episode series is due to air next spring, and will follow three Doctor Who specials with David Tennant later this year.
