If some were speculating about Downton Abbey‘s wane, the British public disagree, as series four became the highest rating TV drama of 2013.
ITV said an overnight average of 9.8 million viewers watching Sunday’s finale was a season high. That was 40 per cent of the total TV audience. But with all viewing – including on-demand and recorded plays – the costume drama had a series average of 11.8 million.
The season finale’s ratings peaked with 10.5 million viewers, according to the overnight figures.
It was confirmed on Sunday that Downton would return for a fifth series in 2014, but before that it returns for a Christmas special which will include Shirley Maclaine and US screen star Paul Giamatti.
