Downton Abbey star Hugh Bonneville has revealed a new fridge is set to leave Mrs Patmore frozen with fear in the new series.

The Downton cook, played by Lesley Nicol, is not a fan of the various mod cons that have been creeping into the house as the show moves further into the 20th century, and series six will see her face a new demon – the refrigerator.

Hugh said: “We’re in 1925 now and Mrs Patmore’s latest horror story is the fridge. Which is another invention that is coming to take her out of her profession.

“Modernity is creeping ever forwards. We had the wireless last year, and all sorts of devices over the years – electricity was the first one. But now we’ve got a fridge. So that’s a big plot spoiler for you.”

He went on: “Lady Rose has been on her honeymoon and she’s now moved to America and Tom Branston has gone to Boston.

“But young Edith and young Lady Mary are always giving us plenty of romantic intrigue, so there’s plenty more where the last series left off. Faces we met at the end of last series may be returning, you never know.”

And the actor, who plays head of the household Lord Grantham, also confirmed there will be another Christmas special at the end of the new series.

He said: “We’ll do a ninth episode which will come out at Christmas.”
