EastEnders stars Jessie Wallace and Shane Richie prove death can be a laughing matter, as they shoot the scenes for Michael Moon’s funeral.

The pair, who play on-off couple Kat and Alfie Moon, share a joke in between filming the sombre scenes at a Hertfordshire churchyard on September 14.

Their characters are set to get close again as they come together to pay their respects to Michael Moon, who will be killed off in coming months.

EastEnders fans have seen menacing Michael (Steve John Shepherd) locked in a bitter custody battle with estranged wife Janine (Charlie Brooks). Details of Michael’s exit is being kept under wraps, but Alice Branning (Jasmyn Banks) will be drawn into the web of deceit as the tension escalates.

An EastEnders insider told Radio Times: “Janine and Michael will really up the ante in terms of how far they’ll go for baby Scarlett. Expect many twists and turns as Michael’s manipulation of Alice increases.”

Michael’s lack of popularity around Albert Square is shown by the lack of mourners by his graveside. Aside from Kat and Alfie, Janine is also seen shedding tears after his coffin is lowered.

“Well, he hadn’t exactly made many friends in Albert Square,” the source added.

Steve, who has played Michael since October 2010, announced in March that he would be leaving the BBC One soap.

The 39-year-old actor said: “After two years of playing Michael, I feel now is the time to move on. I have relished every minute of exploring his character. The good and the bad!

“I feel extremely privileged to have had this amazing experience and I want to thank everybody at EastEnders for their extraordinary support. Most importantly I would like to thank the fans for taking him and his numerous flaws into their hearts.”
