EastEnders star James Alexandrou has spoken about his decision to leave the BBC soap.

James, who plays barrow boy Martin Flower, leaves Albert Square on Friday night.

The 21-year-old actor quit on the same day as Natalie Cassidy, who played his on-screen love interest Sonia. Actress Wendy Richard, who played mum Pauline, left the soap at Christmas.

Speaking to The Sun newspaper, James said: “I actually left at New Year and it felt weird. Like, ‘OK, now what? I’m sure I’m meant to be in a studio somewhere’.”

He added that he was pleased he’d made the break, although he admitted it was a tough decision.

Even more frightening for the young actor was the fact that he had nothing definite lined up to follow.

He said he was making good use of the time off to refresh his acting abilities by attending classes.
James also said he was in talks about possible forthcoming projects.

Like his former co-star Natalie, James insisted he wanted to do something completely different from the character of Martin.

The dark-haired actor, who joined the soap 11 years ago, even suggested he’d make a good James Bond – or even Doctor Who.
