EastEnders‘executive producer Bryan Kirkwood has hinted that there could be a happy ending in store for Ronnie Mitchell in spite of recent events.

Actress Samantha Womack, who plays the troubled character, has left the show, while Ronnie looks set to to go to prison for her role in the ‘baby swap’ storyline which attracted huge controversy.

However Bryan told Inside Soap, “Ronnie’s already paying the price as Kat, Alfie and the rest of the community continue to react to her presence in the Square.

“But the question is: does Ronnie end up fighting back, or does she do the right thing?”

He also hinted that although Ronnie is leaving, it may not necessarily spell the end of her marriage to Jack, played by Scott Maslen.

“I really wanted to return to the original love story between the pair. I believe in the fact that Jack always wants the best for Ronnie. But whether that’s prison or a new life in the sun, you’ll have to watch to find out.”

Bryan added that despite the pressure put upon them by the reaction to the baby swap story, the show’s writers have not altered their original plans for the character.

“This was always going to be Sam’s exit from EastEnders,” he said.

“We’re all really sad to see her go, but we’re sticking to the storyline that we’d originally planned for.”
