If you ever wondered what happened to James Alexandrou, who played Martin Fowler in EastEnders, wonder no more – he’s about to hit the West End, playing evil Iago in William Shakespeare’s Othello.

Sonia Fowler returned to Albert Square earlier this year when she found out her mum, Carol, was fighting breast cancer, but Sonia’s husband Martin hasn’t been seen in EastEnders since 2007.

Martin left Albert Square in 2007 to start a new life with Sonia and their daughter, Rebecca, after his mum, Pauline Fowler (Wendy Richard), was murdered on Christmas Day 2006. After a traumatic time – during which Sonia went back to Jamie Mitchell before Martin ran over and killed him – the couple married and were reunited with Rebecca, then left the Square to start a new life.

Last month, Sonia told Carol that she and Martin were going through a rough patch in their marriage and had separated. There’s been no suggestion that the character of Martin Fowler will return to EastEnders.

According to the Independent, James said he was ‘honoured’ to be involved in this production of Othello, which will run from April 2-26 at the Leicester Square Theatre, with Nari Blair-Mangat playing Othello and Annabel Bates playing Desdemona.
