James Alexandrou has grown up in front of viewers’ eyes as Martin Fowler in BBC soap EastEnders, but this Christmas sees the character lose his mum Pauline (Wendy Richard).

In an interview with Digital Spy, the young actor revealed how he felt about working with the veteran star.

“It’s been wonderful, I’ve learned so much from Wendy, and it’s been amazing, she’s an absolute legend,” he said.
James first joined the show at 11, and after spending so much time with the veteran actress, he was asked if they still keep in touch.

He admitted he’d had the odd text message and phone call, and had taken part in a special show looking back at the actress’s stint on the serial.

Although he wouldn’t be drawn about the storyline surrounding his and co-star Natalie Cassidy’s (Sonia) exits, James did reveal both he and his on-screen ex-wife were thrilled at the prospect of leaving Walford.
“As far as career goes we’re quite excited,” he said.

The same can’t be said of Martin, who has to do an awful lot of soul searching over the Christmas period.

The actor said his alter ego struggles to cope with the death of his mum, but all he wants to do is maintain a stable family life.
