Hollywood actor Patrick Bergin is joining the cast of EastEnders. He’ll play a charismatic villain and old friend of Phil Mitchell, called Aidan Joseph Patrick Maguire.
The 66 year old, who famously starred opposite Julia Roberts in the 1991 blockbuster Sleeping with the Enemy, is due to start filming with the BBC1 soap later this month.
Patrick said: “I am delighted to be joining EastEnders as I have watched and admired it since the days of Dirty Den. It is an iconic show that has the ability to shape the way people think, whilst also telling big explosive stories that keep the audience gripped. I am really looking forward to seeing what they have in store for Aidan as it’s bound to be dramatic.”
Aidan will turn up on Phil Mitchell’s doorstep towards the end of the year, and it will transpire that the two became friends when they were in prison together back in 2005.
A show insider said: “During their time inside, the two formed a strong friendship, helping each other out if and when they needed it. Although they haven’t been in touch for years, when Aidan turns up on Phil’s doorstep it’s not long before the old bond is instantly reignited, as well as Phil’s passion for dabbling in things that aren’t strictly legit.” The source added: “He is full of charm, but cross him at your peril.”
Bergin isn’t the first Hollywood star to appear in the famous square. Back in 1993, a then unknown Jonny Lee Miller – best known for his roles in the Trainspotting films – appeared in two episodes as Jonathan Hewitt, the layabout son of Arthur Fowler’s mistress, Christine.
