Emmerdale viewers enjoyed the humour Gerry brought to the soap
Emmerdale star Shaun Thomas told us leaving the show as Gerry Roberts was “upsetting” – and he was far from being alone in that feeling as viewers watched in horror as Lachlan White murdered the village buffoon .
He killed Gerry to stop him spilling the beans that he caused the fatal crash which claimed the lives of his mum, Chrissie, and granddad Lawrence.
But many fans felt it was a mistake to kill off such a popular character. “I hope you know what you’ve done. You’ve killed off a character who had so much more to give, and you’ve killed one of the Robron family. Lachlan had better get his comeuppance for this,” said one, while another wrote: “How could you. Poor Gerry.”
Another said: “”Why do the soaps always kill off the best characters? Need a bit of humour and @ShaunThomas97 delivered it! Gutted.”
What’s On TV’s Facebook users were also upset to see the back off Gerry. “Should of killed Lachlan instead,” wrote one, while another said: “Loved Gerry he made me laugh… I hope Lachlan finally gets his comeuppance.” Another said: “Brilliant acting won’t be the same without him.”
Asked about his reaction to finding out that his character would be getting killed off, Shaun – who joined the show in January last year – told us: “It was quite a shock because I was only ever meant to come here for two episodes, with Lachlan in prison, and then I ended up staying here for a year and a half, so I got used to being around everybody and made a connection with everybody. And then to be told that that was going to come to an end, that was pretty upsetting.”
