Emmerdale has been named the Best Soap or Continuing Drama at the Broadcast Awards 2011.

Mark Charnock, Dominic Brunt and John Middleton, who play Marlon Dingle, Paddy Kirk and Ashley Thomas in the soap, were among those from the Emmerdale cast and crew who attended the ceremony at London’s Grosvenor Hotel to collect the award.

Mark wrote on Twitter: “Emmerdale! This show that I love so much only went and WON! Everyone delirious!” and posted a picture of the team all toasting their win with champagne.

Danny Miller, who plays Aaron Livesy in the soap, was unable to attend the ceremony and Mark told him they were missing him.

Danny tweeted: “Yes get in! Emmerdale won best soap at Broadcast Awards! Get in lads. Well done!”

EastEnders and Coronation Street tend to dominated in the Best Soap category at awards and Emmerdale found itself completely overlooked at the British Soap Awards in 2010.

The soap has had a run of strong storylines in the last year including Aaron’s battle with his sexuality, Natasha Wylde’s murder, Jackson Walsh’s crash, Holly Barton’s drug problem and the village fire.
