Emmerdale star Jason Merrells has revealed that he has an ambition to become a writer – but added he had no plans to give up the soap just yet.

The actor, who plays Declan Macey in the soap, told the TV Times that he was enjoying the current storyline, in which he has just discovered his wife Ella has been having an affair with their daughter’s boyfriend.

“I’d love to be a full-time writer,” Jason said.

“I’ve got no plans to leave Emmerdale, though, as I’m really enjoying this storyline. It’s the same with any job – I get itchy feet after a while.”

The 43-year-old father of five, who commutes between Yorkshire where the show is filmed, and London where his family live, said that becoming a writer was appealing as it would allow him to spend more time with his children.

However he did reveal that he had found time to fit in other projects around the show.

“I’ve come up with an idea for a TV series and I hope it comes to fruition,” Jason said. “I’ve already made a short film called Le Petite Mort which has been to various festivals.

“Whenever a child of mine has been born, I’ve had this burst of creativity,” he added.

“Perhaps it’s because I envy the creativity of women when they have a child. With each of them it’s been a time when I produce a lot, so I’m making the most of it.”
