Sammy Winward, 29, has played Emmerdale’s feisty Katie Addyman for 13 years and recently announced that she’s quitting the soap early in 2015. Before she goes, though, Sammy takes centre stage for one last Christmas as Katie marries Andy Sugden (Kelvin Fletcher)…
How does it feel to be at the centre of Emmerdale’s big Christmas storyline?
“It feels great. Katie hasn’t featured that much in the past few Christmases. It’s exciting to have the main story because, selfishly, my whole family sits down to watch Emmerdale together and I’ll be in the episode for once,” Sammy tells the Daily Express.
What could go wrong on Katie’s wedding day?
“Katie’s aware that Bernice [Samantha Giles] still holds a torch for Andy and is struggling with it, but Katie doesn’t think she’ll be a threat on the day… And she’s wrong about that. Andy’s brother Robert [Ryan Hawley] is another story, though. He’s always been a thorn in her side and she’s worried he’ll do something to ruin it all.
What can you tell us about Katie’s wedding dress?
“It’s from Coast and is one of the first dresses I tried on. It’s a bit Sarah Jessica Parker, simple at the top and full at the bottom. We didn’t go overboard spending money on the dress, because we needed a few copies of it – I won’t say why.”
What was it like to film the wedding scenes?
“I had long johns under my dress, because churches can be freezing. Kelvin and I got emotional saying our vows, because we’ve worked together for so long. To have our characters get married again was really nice.”
But you’re leaving Emmerdale in the New Year…
“It’s not a decision I have made lightly. I’ve had the most amazing 13 years at Emmerdale and I’m going to miss everyone terribly. But no one becomes an actor to play one role. I don’t want to give anything away about how Katie goes, but it’s dramatic.”
What do you enjoy about Christmas?
I love that we get two weeks off work and I love just eating loads. Last year I put on half a stone from cheese and biscuits.
How do you spend Christmas Day?
At my mum’s house. My sister comes with her husband and Mia [Sammy’s daughter] and I will be there. Mia started writing her Christmas list nine months ago!”
