Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson tones down his customary action-man persona to show off some decent acting skills as an ordinary dad who infiltrates a drug cartel to save his teenage son from prison in this crime thriller, supposedly ‘inspired by true events’. Highlighting the futility of America’s war on drugs and the unfairness of its sentencing laws, the film’s first half has a gritty, authentic feel, but things get steadily less believable as Johnson’s construction company boss gets deeper into his undercover mission, inspiring stuntman-turned-director Ric Roman Waugh to throw in a high-speed car chase to raise the stakes. Look out for Susan Sarandon as a ruthless federal prosecutor and The Wire’s Michael K Williams as a drug dealer.
