After witnessing the suicide of a top Mafia lawyer, young Brad Renfro’s life is in danger. In need of an attorney himself, he turns to Oscar-nominated Susan Sarandon in this slick adaptation of the John Grisham novel. The film concentrates as much on the wary friendship that develops between washed-up Sarandon and Renfro as on the thriller element. They are superb and also excellent is Tommy Lee Jones, as Sarandon’s power-hungry district attorney rival. Anthony LaPaglia plays a loudly dressed hit-man, Mary-Louise Parker plays Renfro’s mum and Anthony Edwards and Will Patton are also involved.
