Although written in 1907 and set in 1886, Joseph Conrad’s classic novel, revolving around an act of terrorism, is strikingly relevant today. This three-part adaptation by Tony Marchant stars Toby Jones (Capital) as Verloc, the owner of a seedy shop in London’s Soho that’s a front for his even murkier dealings. He is paid by the Russian Embassy to spy on a group of anarchists who think he is one of them. But when his paymasters order him to instigate a bombing, a shaken Verloc finds himself woefully out of his depth. Jones is excellent as the selfish Verloc, and he is matched by Vicky McClure (Line of Duty) as his unsuspecting wife Winnie.
