In the American West of the 1880s, Robert Duvall and Kevin Costner are roving cattlemen. In a triumphant re-creation of old-style Western heroics, the two stars live and breathe their rugged roles as they drift into a deadly spot of bother with greedy rancher Michael Gambon. No one does sincerity quite like Costner and, with every line in his face speaking volumes, Duvall has a granite-like authority. Costner’s steely eyed performance comes into its own in the brutal, abrupt and shocking climactic shootout, but there’s also Annette Bening and a little dog to prove that he’s got a kinder side.
