Gregg and Cherry spill the beans on the teatime favourite...
Gregg Wallace spends most of this strangely compelling behind-the-scenes series wide-eyed and shouting ‘Mate! Who knew?!’ and this week’s episode is no different.
Gregg’s visiting the Heinz factory in Wigan, which produces more than three million tins of baked beans a day. Gregg follows some beans through the 54-acre factory on a journey that takes in lasers, robots, secret spices and scenes that wouldn’t be out of place on the set of Blade Runner!
Cherry Healey, meanwhile, finds out what happens to the old cans once we’ve had our beans on toast. This involves visiting ‘the most incredible place I’ve ever set foot in’, and historian Ruth Goodman finds out who came up with the idea of canning food.
