Jenna Coleman is superb as the young Victoria, capturing her strength and her vulnerability as she takes the throne aged just 18.
Only one man, her first Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne (Rufus Sewell), believes she will make a great Queen and she returns his faith by seemingly falling for him. He has his own demons, however, and appears reluctant to get too close.
Meanwhile, her enemies, including the dastardly Duke of Cumberland (Peter Firth), start to plot against her.
This absorbing eight-part drama deserves plenty of praise, but it needs to remember it’s not Downton Abbey – do we really need the distracting downstairs servant scenes? Continues on Monday at 9.00pm.
