A Life in Athletics

Celebrating the past, present and future of British athletics

Long-distance runner, Olympic medallist and TV commentator Brendan Foster has been a regular presence on our screens since the early 1970s.

As he prepares to retire after the upcoming IAAF World Championships, which start on Friday, this programme pays tribute to the founder of the Great North Run and his time covering nine Olympic Games.

Which takes us nicely to Jessica Ennis-Hill, who on BBC2 at 4.30pm profiles some of the rising generation of British athletes – like middle-distance runner Laura Muir and hammer thrower Sophie Hitchon – many of whom Brendan will be commentating on at the end of the week
