With the fire already raging, some villagers are outside in a panic, realising that their friends and neighbours may die. The ferocious fire has engulfed the whole row of cottages in the heart of the village – Keepers Cottage, Victoria Cottage, Connelton View and Dale View, plus the shop and cafe. That means the lives of Betty, Katie, Gennie, Chas, Terry, Brenda, Andy and Ryan are in danger. And they’re not the only ones…

Andy, Carl, Ashley and Ryan try to fight the fire, but they’re no match for the raging inferno. All anyone can do is stand and watch and wait for the emergency services as the row of cottages blaze – and pray that everyone makes it out alive.

Away from the tragedy that’s unfolding in the village, Jai and Declan are helping Nikhil cope with the tragedy that is his love life. Jai insists that Maisie leaving was for the best, but it’s hard for Nikhil to see it that way; he loves her. Declan adds some alcohol to the pity party and manages to get Nikhil to acknowledge that he does have a future without Maisie and he needs to get on with it…

*Second episode*

So who has set the fire in Emmerdale? Was it just one person who was the target of the homicidal maniac – or does the arsonist have it in for the whole village? Andy, of course, is the villager who has a history of playing with fire (Sarah died when he set the barn alight for the insurance money); is this his work? Was he targeting Katie because she rejected him? Or is this Carl getting even? Was he targeting Chas, not expecting the fire to roar through other homes? One thing’s for sure: Betty, Chas, Gennie, Katie, Brenda, Terry and Viv are in grave danger…

While villagers panic outside, Victoria is cowering in The Woolpack, suffering flashbacks of when she set fire to Tenant House (when she was forcing Andy to confess that he set the fire that killed her mother, Sarah). But the fire across the road is too close for comfort for Diane, who desperately tries to get Victoria to go with her to the safety of Mill Cottage.

Jackson’s also feeling helpless and Hazel tries to comfort him, but there’s little either of them can do as the fire rages outside…
