Robert Redford and Nick Nolte star in this breezy buddy movie, based on the travel book by Bill Bryson.
Bryson’s 1998 bestseller followed his foolhardy quest to trek the 2,000 mile Appalachian Trail (the longest continuous footpath in the world), with predictably calamitous results.
Redford plays Bryson and Nolte is his shambolic old friend who becomes his unlikely travelling companion (a role originally intended for Redford’s longtime screen compadre Paul Newman when the project was first mooted in 2005).
The duo hardly blaze a cinematic trail, but their bickering rapport throws up laughs and pathos and the scenery is splendid.
Emma Thompson appears, all too briefly, as the author’s long-suffering wife.
