Complete with an ill-advised blond hairstyle, Colin Farrell is no one’s idea of mighty Macedonian warrior Alexander the Great.
He also keeps his normal Irish accent as do, disconcertingly, most of the supporting cast.
Meanwhile, Jared Leto, Angelina Jolie and Val Kilmer seem to be vying to give the hammiest performance – and there’s a prolonged death scene that will leave you in tears of laughter rather than sadness.
Writer-director Oliver Stone’s film is undoubtedly a mess, then, and incredibly long, but it does have some plus points.
The sheer scope of the film has to be admired, the pounding battle scenes are well staged and Anthony Hopkins’ narration and performance are spot on.
