Beguiled by advertisements promising a luxurious refuge for ‘the elderly and beautiful’, a mixed group of British pensioners (including Judi Dench and Maggie Smith) retires to India.

But the ‘Best Exotic Marigold Hotel’ turns out to be a dilapidated pile that the hapless but ever-hopeful young manager (Dev Patel) is struggling against the odds to maintain.

The shared trials bring some of the visitors together, the magic of teeming, colourful, chaotic India works its magic on others – while some don’t settle at all…

Director John Madden’s charming comedy drama benefits immensely from its classy ensemble cast that as well as Dench and Smith includes Tom Wilkinson, Penelope Wilton, Celia Imrie and Ronald Pickup.

True, this comedy is very cosy and predictable, but the uplifting story leaves a warm, feelgood glow.
