Woody Allen’s bittersweet period comedy finds Jessie Eisenberg’s callow New Yorker travelling to 1930s Los Angeles, hoping to blag a job with his Hollywood agent uncle (Steve Carell).
However, he encounters heartache after he falls in love with his uncle’s secretary and secret mistress (Kristen Stewart).
This is very much minor key Allen, but the swanky set design is ravishing, Eisenberg’s neurotic hero is spot on and Stewart is the best ting in the movie, providing touches of real feeling to Allen’s contrived plot.
Blake Lively, Ken Stott, Parker Posey and Anna Camp are also among the cast.
Showing from 18 June.
