Richard Dreyfuss is superb as an ordinary guy who becomes obsessed with UFOs in Steven Spielberg’s spectacular sci-fi classic.

More than 40 years old, this movie is still a dazzling spectacle and tells a marvellous, overwhelmingly emotional story climaxing in humans making contact with the alien occupants of a spaceship.

With its eye-catching, Oscar-winning cinematography, staggering special effects and outstanding score, it’s a showcase for just how much the director and technical crew can achieve – but the acting impresses too.

Dreyfuss is perfectly cast as the everyman hero, an electricity company repair man who sets the story in motion after he witnesses UFOs near his Indiana home and French director François Truffaut is outstanding at the end as the scientist in charge.
