Journalist Steve Carell has an agony uncle column called Dan in Real Life, but could do with taking some advice on his own life.
He’s a widowed dad with his hands full bringing up three precocious daughters, then on the way to a family weekend at his parents’ home on Rhode Island, he instantly falls for a woman (Juliette Binoche) he meets in a bookshop.
Unfortunately, she turns out to be his brother Dane Cook’s new girlfriend! And he has no idea what to do next…
Perfectly cast Carell (all befuddled hangdog) and Binoche (all smiley life-force) give adorable, funny performances in this deliciously lovely, unusually persuasive romcom that for once takes the trouble to create characters you care about.
Cook makes his role very likeable, too, and Dianne Wiest and John Mahoney add class as their parents.
