Blake Jenner plays a freshman baseball pitcher in 1980 Texas in this appealing comedy.
Three days before the start of term, Jenner gets know his new teammates and takes a shine to performing arts student Zoey Deutch.
Nothing particularly earth shattering takes place, but writer-director Richard Linklater (of Boyhood fame) brings a loose-limbed spirit to his nostalgic film. And, despite all its breezy nonchalance, the film manages to be a deceptively subtle portrait of young manhood.
Linklater captures his characters’ bantering camaraderie and boozy machismo with disarming sympathy and the period details are spot on – you can almost smell the booze, bad cologne and testosterone.
