Provocative singer Michelle Pfeiffer breathes new life into the tired lounge piano act of Jeff and Beau Bridges.

As a long lingering look at the bottom rung of the showbiz ladder, this smouldering romantic comedy is hard to beat.

Pfeiffer’s rendition of Makin’ Whoopee (and that is her singing voice) is the obvious highlight, but the film also makes light work of the way her joining the act puts a strain on the brothers’ friendship.

Predictable, perhaps, but seeing those old showbiz clichés being dusted off in such a keen fashion is precisely why the film is so charming.
