Michael Portillo is on the move once again!
This time he’s in India, with his handy Bradshaw’s guide. He begins his adventure in Punjab and visits the beautiful Golden Temple at Amritsar.
Despite its 100,000 visitors daily, Michael is struck by the temple’s tranquillity, and rolls up his sleeves to help in its free kitchen, the largest in the world.
In Ludhiana he visits a women’s medical school founded in 1874 and meets a staff nurse who, as a child, received the first face transplant there.
Later, Michael goes to the silk markets in Ambala and has a colourful kurta tailormade, before boarding the famous hill railway at Kalka for a stunning five-hour ride through the Himalayas to Shimla.
