Jac Naylor thought she was in safe hands when she asked Professor John Gaskell to operate on her as part of his pioneering stem cell trial. But it seems the surgeon could be suffering serious side effects when tragedy strikes.
Jac (Rosie Marcel) is having a trying day and director of nursing Adrian ‘Fletch’ Fletcher (Alex Walkinshaw) is adding to her stress. When a scrub nurse he arranged fails to show up, Jac tells Fletch she needs him to assist her in theatre.
Fletch, however, has enough on his plate dealing with his eldest daughter Evie, who wants to know why her dad won’t let her see her granddad Steven (Jesse Birdsall), who turned up last week after a 17-year absence.
Jac’s annoyed that Fletch is putting his family drama before patient care. And when Jac suggests he’s handling the situation badly, Fletch is furious and the once-firm friends have a blazing row!
Later, when Fletch goes to make his peace with Jac, he’s shocked to find her lying unconscious in her office. As a panicked Fletch raises the alarm, medics battle to revive her. Will Jac join the list of patients who’ve succumbed to Gaskell’s risky surgery?
Meanwhile, after growing close to cancer patient Julie, Essie’s surprised to learn that her teenage son, Josh, was once rejected as a possible candidate for Professor Gaskell’s stem cell trial.
Josh has a spinal injury and, with his mum terminally ill, Essie knows that Josh needs to gain some independence. So she’s thrilled when Gaskell reveals he’s reviewed Josh’s case and is now willing to operate. Can Gaskell give Josh hope?
