Orphan Owen Vaccaro encounters spooky goings-on when he goes to live with his uncle (Jack Black).

This children’s film from horror master Eli Roth (of Hostel notoriety) cooks up some effective family-friendly scares when Vaccaro arrives at eccentric Black’s creepy old house in 1955 small-town Michigan.

It turns out that Black is a benign warlock and that his cookie-baking next-door neighbour (Cate Blanchett) is a good witch.

The ensuing spine-tingling scrapes are suitably mild and the film’s overall mood is deliciously enchanting.

This film is available from Sunday 31 March.
