This penultimate episode in the saga lacks oomph, but Jennifer Lawrence’s charisma as renegade warrior Katniss Everdeen makes it worthwhile.
Katniss reluctantly joins the propaganda battle against President Snow (Donald Sutherland) while her friend Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) becomes a pawn for the other side. To match the sombre mood, even Elizabeth Banks’ bubble-headed fashionista Effie looks drab.
With much of the action confined to the insurgents’ underground bunkers, the film matches Katniss’ dour mood as it explores the pros and cons of revolution and the manipulative power of propaganda.
It’s all very dark and talky but, just as Katniss’ iconic presence proves uplifting for the story’s downtrodden masses, so Lawrence keeps us glued to the screen.
