Last September, 12 years after Johnny Cash’s death, this excellent film aired in the US under the title Johnny Cash: American Rebel. It’s a fitting tribute, with Cash’s friends, family and collaborators including Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson remembering a complicated, passionate man. Especially moving are scenes in which John Carter Cash and Rosanne Cash sing their father’s songs, and producer Rick Rubin talks about the 1990s project that brought a nervous Cash, his career in decline, to a thrilled new audience after years in the wilderness.
