In a genetically engineered future society, ageing stops at 25 and people’s lives end when they reach 26 unless they buy themselves more time. While the rich are virtually immortal, poor folk, such as Justin Timberlake’s ghetto kid, have to scrabble from day to day, their lifespan ticking down on the glowing digital clock embedded in everyone’s arms.
Suddenly, though, Timberlake finds himself with a lot of years on his clock, but under suspicion of murder. He goes on the run, picking up rich girl Amanda Seyfried along the way, and the film turns from an intriguing sci-fi with some provocative ideas about inequality into a run-of-the-mill action thriller. Still, the stars make their roles count and it is entertaining while it lasts.
