Chris goes to visit his father’s resting place, where he finds a stranger at the plaque. The man introduces himself as Justin – he was at university with Sam. Chris pushes Justin to talk, and he tells Chris about Emma and Sam’s courtship…

It’s 1988 and a 16-year-old Emma meets 20-year-old Sam. The two fall in love and Emma’s parents are happy she’s found a sensible man rather than the usual guys she drags home. Then Emma receives an acceptance letter for medicine at Edinburgh University. Sam worries he’ll lose her if she goes, but Emma tells him not to worry – it’ll be a good year until she leaves. Then Emma learns she’s pregnant.

Emma tells Sam she wants to abort, but he won’t hear of it – it’s their baby. Sam promises if they have this child he’ll be a house husband and  she’ll still go to medical school, just a few years later than planned. They marry a year later. In the present, Chris knows Emma didn’t want him but Justin reassures him she was 17 and did decide to keep the baby. And he reveals there’s also a lot more to the story…

It’s now 1997, Emma graduates from medical school and Chris is a young boy. As Sam and Justin sip drinks, Sam says everything has worked out how it should, it was worth it. Justin asks what was worth it? Sam admits after he and Emma fought about her going to Edinburgh, he put a hole in a condom. In the present, Chris realises who Justin is – it’s his Uncle Spike, who vanished when he was a kid, as Sam feared he’d tell Emma.

Later, at home, Chris realises his father could be manipulative and that he manipulated him to help end his life. Emma returns home and Chris asks her if she’d have done anything differently in her life. She smiles and honestly says no.
