Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kick-Ass and Chloë Grace Moretz’s Hit Girl are trying to live as normal teenagers in this sequel to 2010’s taboo-busting comic-book action thriller.
But with would-be supervillain Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) plotting vengeance, it’s not long before they’re up to their old ways. A rag-tag bunch of vigilantes, led by Jim Carrey’s born-again ex-mobster, Colonel Stars and Stripes, is pulled into the conflict, with predictably violent results.
There are fewer big laughs this time and the film can’t quite recapture the close-to-the-knuckle dark comedy of the original. However, it still packs a punch and Moretz’s sword-wielding character is still amazing – especially when it comes to the priceless comeuppance she delivers to a snooty clique of cheerleaders.
