Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet star in this captivating romantic drama.

He’s an escaped con who uses a mix of bluff, charm and menace to cajole Winslet’s depressed single mum and her callow young son (Gattlin Griffith) into hiding him in their home. But, naturally, the hunky felon turns out to have a heart of gold. And, as the holiday weekend of the title unfolds, he and the heartbroken Winslet begin to fall in love.

Director Jason Reitman’s movie sometimes teeters on the brink of self-parody – especially during a spot of peach-pie baking that recalls the potter’s wheel episode from Ghost – and the film’s overcooked romance requires a large pinch of salt to swallow, but Winslet and Brolin’s terrific acting helps it slip down with ease.
