When Matthew McConaughey won an Oscar for his terrific performance in Dallas Buyers Club, it put the seal on a remarkable Hollywood comeback. But the film that turned his acting fortunes around after a string of so-so romcoms and misfiring blockbusters was this cracking legal thriller.
He’s superb in the film’s title role, playing a slick LA lawyer who works from the back of his Lincoln car and usually defends low-life criminals. He steps into a different league, however, when he lands the case of smooth rich boy Ryan Phillippe, accused of beating up a prostitute… but there’s more to the case than first meets the eye.
Based on the page-turning novel by Michael Connelly, this crime drama keeps on the road thanks to its satisfyingly hard-boiled dialogue, cunning plot and top-notch performances from co-stars Phillippe, William H Macy and Marisa Tomei alongside the terrific McConaughey.
