Abigail Breslin is a little star as a would-be beauty queen in this superb comedy drama.

She’s desperate to take part in a kids’ pageant and so her dysfunctional family heads off across country in a clapped-out old camper van to make her dream come true.

Toni Collette and Greg Kinnear are excellent as mum and dad, Oscar-winning Alan Arkin is hilarious as Breslin’s foul-mouthed, sex-obsessed and hippyish grandpa and also superb are Steve Carell as Breslin’s suicidal uncle and Paul Dano as her sullen brother who refuses to talk.

Part scathing satire, part feelgood schmaltz, this is a brilliantly written (the script also won an Oscar) and witty take on America’s obsession with success.
