Sally Hawkins plays arthritic Canadian folk artist Maud Lewis in this moving biopic.

Bent over and hunched, Hawkins undergoes an astonishing physical transformation, but what’s really impressive about her performance is the spark and soul she brings to the role.

Born with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, the stubbornly independent Maud sets up home in 1938 Nova Scotia with cantankerous fish peddler Everett Lewis (Ethan Hawke).

An unlikely romance slowly unfolds as Maud locates the tenderness beneath Everett’s wounded bluster, while creating her cheerfully naïve art.
