Between 1960’s The Magnificent Seven and 1971’s Le Mans, Steve McQueen became the biggest movie star in the world. But as this two-part documentary presented by Henry Coles shows, his first love was racing.
McQueen would race in just about anything he could get his hands on – a car, a bike, on road and off. In fact, at one point McQueen’s studio – worried about their star getting injured – banned him from off-road bike racing. But he did it anyway, using the name Harvey Mushman.
Cole travels down California, talking to McQueen’s family and friends about this true rebel, and ITV4 follows this with a showing of Bullitt, the San Francisco-set film which contains one of the most exciting car chases in cinema history.
