When Lee’s dad (Bobby Ball) babysits, it sets in motion a chain of events that culminates in a huge fight between Lee and Lucy, the in-laws and former neighbours Anna and Toby (Abigail Cruttenden and Hugh Dennis).

Fast-forwarding this series from Lee and Lucy finally getting together, then settling down and having three children hasn’t really altered the structure, but why would you tinker with one of the BBC’s longest-running sitcoms?

It’s the writing, in particular the sheer volume of one-liners, that has always made Not Going Out so watchable and that’s not changed, either. Solid Friday-night entertainment.
