Ryan Gosling’s drug dealer is sent to find his brother’s killers in this very violent but good-looking thriller.
Director Nicolas Winding Refn’s Bangkok-set revenge thriller may prove off-putting, with its unflinching gore and crawling pace.
However, there are plenty of striking visuals to enjoy as Gosling’s American expat wanders through a series of neon-soaked interiors, urged by his ruthless mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) to avenge the death of his brother.
This mission brings him up against an implacable, karaoke-singing, sword-wielding police officer, a cop with a fiercely punitive approach to law and order.
However, it is the sight of a foul-mouthed, bleached blonde Scott Thomas as the monstrous matriarch that may prove the film’s biggest shock.
