Foolhardy young Canadian Jay Bahadur (Evan Peters) heads to Somalia in 2008 intending to make his mark as a reporter.
He wants to get the low-down on the region’s pirates, a journalistic first. This fact-based movie has the worthy aim of presenting a different perspective on strife-torn Somalia than that found in such films as Black Hawk Down and Captain Phillips, but its bid to combine fish-out-of-water comedy with geopolitical insight doesn’t really come off.
Al Pacino hams it up in a cameo as the hero’s mentor and Melanie Griffith has a small role as his mom, but it is Barkhad Abdi – Oscar-nominated for playing a pirate in Captain Phillips – who makes the biggest impression and delivers the most nuanced performance.
This film premieres on Sky Cinema Premiere on 2 June.
