Director Tim Burton’s remake of the 1967 Charlton Heston sci-fi classic shows off some excellent make-up and special effects. Helena Bonham Carter, Tim Roth and Michael Clarke Duncan are all able to express their personalities under the layers of make-up and Heston has a crusty simian cameo, too.
With the apes literally jumping all over the place, the battle scenes are vigorously staged and the arrival of a crucial second spaceship on the scene is a mesmerising moment.
However, plot wise the film is an unfocused mess and the characters tend to be swamped by the sheer weight of movie magic being thrown at them.
