Tom Cruise and Catherine Zeta-Jones are among the big-name stars in this fun adaptation of the hit stage musical.

Hanging the songs – by the likes of Def Leppard, Twisted Sister and Poison – from the flimsy peg of a ho-hum boy-meets-girl love story between Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta is hardly riveting viewing, while the musical numbers lack oomph.

So it’s up to the starry supporting players to liven things up. As burned-out, boozed-up rock god Stacey Jaxx, Cruise goes gleefully over the top. Alec Baldwin, as a weary club manager, and Zeta-Jones, as a self-righteous anti-metal campaigner make their entertaining mark and Russell Brand, Paul Giamatti and Malin Akerman are also on show.
