In the original Roots, ‘Chicken’ George, the grandson of Kunta Kinte, was one of the most memorable characters and he takes centre stage again here.

As a child, George discovers an affinity for chickens when Tom Lea, his cruel slavemaster and secret father, takes him to a vicious cockfight.

A charming Regé-Jean Page is the older George, battling to win his family’s freedom and falling for preacher’s daughter Matilda, while also forging a complex relationship with Lea, whose destructive behaviour spirals further out of control.

But, with an escape from slavery seemingly within George’s grasp, will he get his heart’s desire or be thwarted again?
