Sergeant Smithy’s day gets off to a bad start when he finds Ryan Jones holding up traffic – his car has run out of petrol. Failing to notice Ryan’s agitated state, Smithy helps to push the car out of the road when he notices blood on the car boot. Ryan suddenly makes a run for it, and Smithy is horrified when he opens the boot to find Ryan’s wife’s body – she’s been beaten to death.

When DCI Jack Meadows and DC Mickey Webb arrive at the scene, Smithy admits that he let slip to Ryan’s wife that her husband had been using an internet sex site. Pcs Roger Valentine and Diane Noble get a call-out to a possible sighting of Ryan – he’s armed with a gun and he’s heading into Charing Cross tube station. Roger and Diane give chase but Ryan jumps onto a tube just as the doors close.

Later, Smithy and Inspector Gina Gold rush to a location where a man has been seen acting aggressively and spot Ryan sitting on a bench. As they try to clear the area, an agitated Ryan reacts and shoots at two passers-by as he makes a getaway. It seems that Ryan has a personal vendetta against Smithy – and after visiting Ryan’s workplace, Mickey realises that Ryan knows where Smithy lives…

Mickey turns up at Smithy’s house and it looks like Ryan has been and gone. There’s evidence of a break-in, and Smithy’s address book is open at his mum’s address. Meanwhile, Ryan arrives at Smithy’s mum Pauline’s house and threatens her at gunpoint but he makes a run for it when Smithy leaves a message on his mum’s answerphone.

When Smithy spots Ryan lurking outside the house, he gives chase, following him back down into the underground. Smithy doesn’t spot Ryan on the platform – but when the tube pulls away, Ryan appears. He’s got a gun in his hand and he wants Smithy to pay for ruining his life…
